Forums => Rants > Breaking a Story

Maybe I'm just too new at this, but why the hell do sites feel the need to have stories on topics that they know are quotes taken out of context. Yes people will flock to it because they are hungry for information on certain topics, but don't you think that after a while people would start seeing the site as a "cry wolf" site?

I'm just saying, that doing some factual research, and making sure that what is being said might have some true roots might not be a bad thing. Or maybe the name of the game is to just constantly bombard people with any and every piece of gossipy news. So with that I say, "holy crap did you hear about this dude, who is a friend of a friend of a friend at Square Enix, the whole Final Fantasy VII remake is totally coming out on the PlayStation 4000. That's right Sony's already got this super pimped out machine that does crazy 4500000p. It will blow the competition away. The only problem is that the system is so sophisticated that the characters actually come out of the screen, and there's a chance when you're dealing with Jenova, that you might die." You heard it here first folks, now go run and tell all your friends, and have them bombard my site with hits because I'm that self conscious and need the approval of people with false hopes. HAHAHAHA in the end I shall crush THEM!!!

You answered yourself in the first paragraph, you foolish peon!!!

And I quote, "Yes people will flock to it because they are hungry for information on certain topics," is exactly it. Why not publish ZOMG SENSATIONALISM when you know people will flock to the media gods and fill their coffers with money?

Regardless, I reckon some places are better known for FACTS than RUMORS. Like techreport.com for instance...normally very good with cold, hard facts & reviews, they published a silly mac rumor a few months ago and the forum was aflood with, "wtf, we don't come to TR for rumors. We come here because ya'll have standards and trust your word!!"

I also think part of it us to the consumer to educate themselves on what may be hyperbole and rumor versus what is probably fact. Granted, there's plenty of gray area. And this is why I LOVE the Internet. No longer must we take for granted that the corporate overlords are presenting the facts fairly in the no spin zone (an oxymoron if I've watched a show), but now we can independently both report and fact check what the corporate overlords are telling us to believe.

I guess with me I'm more of the "I want the factual information" type of person. Yes I have to say that some rumors peak my interest, and sometimes the facts can be bland and boring. I'm just saying that I'd rather have a site that reported the facts, than one that is built on rumors and lies.

I think its all about the image you give off and the reputation of the site. Like I said before there are some sites out there that have to run with some small whisper and screw with people's heads simply because there's this mentality of first for the win, not slow and steady wins the race.

I think that rumors, in my opinion, are better left for forums and debate. I think that make it a story gives people a false since of factuality, and end the end, if its a big enough site, hurts the medium that is now becoming the place to go for up to the minute news.

The the choice is easy, my friend: Stick to websites that are known more for their factuality than rumors. Certain cites thrive off being a rumor mill. That's their prerogative. And the beautiful part of it is WE have the choice. Going back to TV, I'm not limited to 4 sources of news and information. Now, I have a plethora of choices, and can base my opinion of a site on the validity claims they make.

There!!!! may your hit counter rejoice as it overfloweth!

As for a quick rant on US news...........take your pick.........Republican, Democrat, whatever.........they each have their own news station and you all know which belongs to whom.

It is an incredibly stark contrast to ......oh I don't know.........maybe the BBC or any European News Channel ever. Gasp, choke, wonder in amazement! A news channel that gives a crap about what happens outside their own countries borders? "What do you mean we are not the alpha and omega of the world?" "Why should we care about other countries news unless we are causing it???" .............awwww there there Amercian News Groups, it's ok, you can keep reporting on the US news in your preferred shade of Red or Blue and leave the rest of the news to the grown up channels.

Leave no News Group behind.
