Sadly I think that we can thank certain genres for the death of the instruction manual. For most RPGers who really want to get into a game, they need that manual to help orient them in what to expect from the game and so that they can already start to formulate what they'll be trying to accomplish.
I have seen, in a couple of the "newer" manuals, a website link to get more information at, but I'm pretty sure that not everyone is in the habit of putting that in the manual, and I'm sure that not everyone wants to go to a website. Especially since games are now becoming so picky about what you can be running while you're running the game.
Lets say that you are deep in an adventure when your character gets a strange icon on their portrait. What use to be just open up the manual and look for the answer has turned into pause the game, alt + tab, go to a website, search for the game, hope that you can get good info on your situation. It is turned into a complete hit or miss type of situation.

You know what I miss? REAL instruction manuals. I'm talking ones from the older Civilization games (and the big, badass foldout poster of the tech tree and upgrades), the nwn and bouldar's gate manuals...all so badass and informative. I think I read some of those manuals more than I played the game. Yes, I'm that much of a dork.
Now...All we get are pidly little 10-pg manuals telling you how to attack, move, save, and the rest is taken up by ZOMG piracy, warranty, and liability sections. I mean, really, who needs an easy way to learn what random power x does or what exactly are the d20 battle mechanics. Will? Consitition? Plus stats? I'm assuming they're good...but beyond that, who knows unless I scour the interwebs.
Alas, my friends, it is now up to YOU to magically discover the secrets of games. To figure out if that power is useful by trial and error, rather just just being told straight up that it doesn't work against dwarves like days of old. At least it gives me a reason to visit gamefaqs.com beyond wanting cheats.
