King's Bounty: The Legend
Think of this as a follow-up to Charlie's post about King's Bounty: The Legend. Like him, I remember playing this back in the day, so I finally decided to get a copy and give it a whirl. I was excited considering his enthusiasm, but that excitement was quickly blown to pieces.
- I originally got the game on vacation where I tried playing the game on my MacBook virtualizing XP with Parallels. No dice. At first, all the game would do is load up and do nothing, as the kb.exe file would just stop running. No explanation, nothing. OK, fine, I decide to get the patch, only what do I find? I lovely message from SecuROM that the original disk cannot be found...nevermind that it was the original DVD. I decided to chalk it up to running in a virtualized environment and move on with my life.
- Get back home, and install KB on my WinXP machine. Huzzah, it works! I decide to tempt fate and install the recent patch, only with the friendly SecuROM (notice how close to "suck you rom," which rhymes with another word, it sounds?) message telling me I need the original disk to play. I could have sent some file off to SecuROM with the errors and they "might" be able to fix it, but alas, another example where it would have been easier for me to pirate the game. I reinstall without installing the patch and begin playing.
- Started off well enough, but I was immediately turned off because of the questing system. It's a relatively large world, and lots of quests which is awesome, right? Well, one small problem I encountered: No help in figuring out where I got a quest from and even the symbols above their heads were non-intuitive. Perhaps Charlie can comment on this, but when I finished a quest, I had trouble figuring out where to go and hand it in.. WoW was pretty bad about this, too, but at least all their quest givers were in a concentrated area.
- A combination of all these issues, while maybe not too huge on their own right, have added up to turn me off to the game. I still play it a little here and there, but I'm a streaky gamer who will play a game for a week straight, but if you don't catch my attention right away, chances are it'll just start collecting dust.
