Chronicles of Inotia: Legend of Feanor Review

Chronicles of Inotia: Legend of Feanor, a RPG hack and slash for the i-pod touch/i-phone puts you into the role of a blond haired adventurer who's mission is to right the wrongs, and help out all he meets with completing their tasks.

Graphically this game looks solid. It is 2D, but they definitely give the game a 3D feel as enemies can walk behind trees and what not. The enemies all have a distinct look to them, so you'll know what you're getting yourself into right before either you attack or they attack. The way that the shops are done look a bit messy. You're going to see items just laying on the floor. I think a bit of menu management would have helped greatly. I do really like the screen layout. The placement of the potions, for quick use, and the position of the health bar make the screen look clean and optimize the space so that you can focus on the adventuring.

The music of the game fit perfectly. The sound on the other hand is a bit odd. You're going to be hearing a lot of thwacking coming from your character, but your enemies are going to be stealthy assassins, never making a noise when they connect on a successful attack, which I have to say is a bit odd.

The controls are an interesting thing. They of course are touch the screen and your character will either go there, attack that creature, bring up a menu, use a potion, or use your skill. The wierd thing is that the pathfind for moving to a place is very well thought out, but the pathfinding for attacking a moving enemy is a little odd. There are sometimes where you'll find your character walk pass the enemy and then up to one of its sides before attacking.

So as stated before you are an adventurer willing to take on the world and the quests that the people of the world have for you. the game has an appeal for those hungering for something along the lines of Diablo for the i-pod touch/i-phone, but it feels like it fall just short. I think one of the reasons it does is that there might be more limitations than most realize for this platform. The animations are a bit choppy. Everything moves up, down, left, or right, there is no diagonal movement. There are times where the game almost looks like a turn based game, instead of a real-time game. There's also the simple fact that you're going to have to mindlessly hack and slash at the same enemies for a while before you are able to do much in the game, which unfortunately many people will put the game down before they get passed that part.

This is a solid effort, and I think that this game deserves at least a look over. There are some issues with the game, but its probably the strongest candidate right now for a game along the lines of Diablo for the i-pod touch/i-phone. I wish I could give this game a slightly better score, but this game gets a 6.8 out of 10.
