Dark Void Review

The game Dark Void was created by Airtight games, and released on the major consoles. The best way to describe the plot of this game is that it is “The Rocketeer” meets “The Matrix.” The story takes place in the 1930’s where meet our main character Will. When we meet Will, he is flying a cargo plane in the Caribbean when he is sucked into the Bermuda Triangle, which the game calls “the Void.” Once in the void Will and his companion Ava come under attack from a group of Aliens called the Watchers.  These Aliens came from outer space to control earth, but eventually the humans banished them to the void where they are stuck, but not really stuck. As the plot continues we learn the Watchers are the European Fascists trying to take over the world. As the game progresses will and Ava help out groups of humans in the void where Will is given a rocket pack (the Rocketeer) to fly around the void and help save the humans. Later we learn that Will is “the one” (the Matrix) and he is supposed to stop the Watchers. This plot is not original at all. The most original part of the plot is that it takes place inside the Bermuda Triangle.

Dark Void is a 3rd person shooter with a twist, part of the game play is done on a vertical axis. So you are attacking opponents looking up and down. The game really pushes this vertical game play at the beginning of the game, but loses it half way through. The second half of the game is played more like a flight simulator. Will flies through the air, and you attack ships and monster. Overall the game play is like most other 3rd person shooters. There really is nothing special about it.

The game has many faults that I noticed. First, I got stuck in walls 4 or 5 times. To get out of the wall I either had to be killed or restart. Once I was stuck, I was stuck. The second major problem I came across was the game tried to over step the capabilities of the system. When I was in dogfights on the rocket pack, there was too much action going on the sound would skip. The video and game play were fine, but the sound skipped. It was more than annoying.  The final part of this game that was a turn off was the story. I did not find it original, and in many ways it was forgettable. The biggest part of the story was that it just ended. The game set up like it was going to have a cool final level, and ending. It did not. The game just kind of ended. I am not sure if the Watchers were stopped. I just know I got home. The story was a let down. Going back to my original point, you are on a jetpack in the 1930’s and they even give you a helmet, was just like the Rocketeer. In the movie, the Rocketeer even stops the Nazi’s; in the game it is the Fascists. The Nazi’s were fascists. Will finds out he is “the one,” I believe Neo is “the one” in the Matrix as well. Dark Void in my eyes was not creative or original, and only worth a rental. I give this game a 5.5 out of 10.
